A Home Designed to Stay Relevant Over Time

Grand Rapids, MI

Update the home—without losing what made it feel right.

This project wasn’t about replacing a traditional home with something modern. It was about evolving it—bringing it up to date while keeping the warmth and familiarity the homeowner valued.

The risk in a transformation like this is going too far in either direction: staying dated, or stripping away the character that made the home feel like home in the first place.

The design focused on balance. Custom cabinetry in painted white and rich woodgrain introduced contrast—adding lightness without losing warmth. Ceiling details, lighting, and trim were refined to bring in a cleaner look, while still carrying the depth and craftsmanship of the original style.

Every decision was made to simplify and update—without overcorrecting.

The result is a home that feels current and functional, but still grounded in what it was—comfortable, familiar, and built to last.
