Grand Haven’s identity is inseparable from the water. The city sits where the Grand River meets Lake Michigan, and everything about daily life here — the boardwalk, the red lighthouse, the Coast Guard Festival, the walk downtown — is shaped by that setting. It also shapes the housing stock in ways that don’t show up in most West Michigan towns: historic homes near downtown built long before anyone thought about beach traffic, lake-view properties where every square foot near the water carries a premium, and newer inland neighborhoods further from Beacon Boulevard offering more space for the money. A remodel here has to account for which version of Grand Haven a home belongs to, because they don’t all call for the same approach.

Homes closer to the lake and channel tend to be older, smaller on their lots, and built for a different era of tourism and seasonal living. They are full of character but often cramped by today’s standards. Homes further inland, east of Beacon Boulevard, tend to offer more square footage and more straightforward remodeling potential. And a growing number of newer builds on the east side, in neighborhoods like Copperstone, are recent enough that the remodeling conversation is less about outdated systems and more about refining a layout that didn’t quite deliver on its promise. Knowing which category a home falls into shapes almost everything about how we approach the project.

Grand Haven families entertain houseguests in the summer, neighbors after a festival, and family in for the holidays. A lot of older homes near downtown simply weren’t built with that kind of gathering in mind. A kitchen remodel here often means opening a closed-off layout, adding the counter and storage space a busy household needs, without losing the character that made the home worth buying in the first place.

Many of Grand Haven’s older, closer-to-downtown homes have a single full bathroom serving a family that outgrew it years ago. Even some of the newer inland builds have primary suites that feel like an afterthought. A bathroom remodel here is about matching the private spaces of the home to the way the family lives, not just updating tile and fixtures.

Lot size varies enormously across Grand Haven, from tight, historic in-town parcels to more generous inland properties, so an addition that makes sense on one street may not make sense two blocks over where a whole home remodel is more realistic. Before recommending anything, we look at the whole picture — the lot, the home’s age and construction, and how any addition holds up against the market Grand Haven’s lakeshore premium has created. Big picture first. The rest follows from there.

A remodel is not a transaction. It’s a years-long relationship between a family and the home they’ve chosen in one of West Michigan’s most sought-after lakeshore communities. We treat it that way: asking questions before offering solutions, planning around how the household actually lives, and staying present well past the day the crew packs up.

Home Specialists proudly serves homeowners in Grand Haven, Spring Lake, Ferrysburg, Norton Shores, and communities throughout West Michigan and the Lakeshore.

We just wrapped a remodel of our screened-in porch (turning it into an enclosed sunroom) with Home Specialists LLC and the entire experience has been great from start to finish. They've been very responsive and proactively gave us project updates. They also finished the job relatively quickly, despite some winter weather disruptions. Overall, it's been a great experience and we are loving the new space!

Home Specialists staff were professional with a beautiful job well done. Before contacting Home Specialists I had requested quotes from 4 other contractors with little or no success. I had given up on my project when I attended the GR Home & Garden show and I had a conversation with Pella Window staff who recommended Home Specialists. I contacted them, I received a visit from the staff within a day and within a reasonable time, a valid quote compared to other quotes. I can't thank them enough for fulfilling my dream of a sunroom with access to an outdoor area which I will enjoy for many years to come.

We needed a main floor laundry and main floor full bath to support our "age in place" plans. The kitchen needed an update as well. Working with Home Specialists and Align Cabinetry exceeded our expectations! Every aspect of the process, from initial consult through final finishing touches, was handled with professionalism, courtesy, respect and understanding by the staff and subcontractors. Our expectations were managed through clear communication every step of the way. The quality of craftsmanship is outstanding, but it is the quality of the relationship built that made all the difference. Thank you Align Cabinetry and Home Specialists!

Home Specialists LLC did an excellent job on the extensive remodeling of our primary bathroom with an eye towards aging in place. The staff communicated regularly with me and kept the project on schedule. I appreciated the friendly and calm demeanor of employees despite, I’m sure, lots of hectic days. I highly recommend them.
